Snowdon Ranger Path with views across the Snowdon range on a clear day

Starting beside the Snowdon Ranger Youth Hostel, the Snowdon Ranger Path (Llwybr Cwellyn) is one of the most direct and historic routes to the summit of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), rising steadily above Llyn Cwellyn.

You’re in the right place if you’re looking for a straightforward mountain path with no scrambling, relying on steady uphill walking rather than technical terrain. Expect a long, sustained climb rather than a gentle stroll.

The route begins next to the Snowdon Ranger YHA, just a short drive from the surrounding villages, and has long been regarded as one of the simpler ways to reach the summit. While the path climbs steeply at first, it soon settles into a clear, well-defined track that maintains a steady gradient for much of the ascent.

On clear days, the open nature of the route offers uninterrupted views ahead, with the summit often visible for much of the walk. The wide outlook over Llyn Cwellyn and the western hills gives a strong sense of progress as you climb higher.

Historically, this path is closely associated with the Snowdon Ranger Inn and the early days of mountain tourism in the late 19th century. It became popular with Victorian walkers as a practical, uncomplicated route to the top — and that directness, combined with the views over Llyn Cwellyn, is exactly what makes it worth choosing today.

Although technically the most straightforward of the Snowdon routes, this is still a serious mountain walk. Check the forecast, start early, and make sure you descend via the Ranger Path — it’s easy to drift onto the Llanberis Path at the top and add significant distance to your day.

This is the walk I’d recommend to anyone doing Snowdon for the first time — it’s the most straightforward route and you’re not walking with the masses coming up from Llanberis. Just make sure you come back down the right path. There’s a marker at the top showing the Ranger Path descent — don’t ignore it.” — Delyth, Perthi Holiday Cottages

Step-by-Step Walk Guide

Numbered steps with photos to help you follow the route.

Paid parking is found opposite the Snowdon Ranger YHA. To begin the walk, cross the road and make your way towards the YHA. You will see a sign guiding you up a path before you arrive at the YHA (pictured).
Follow this path, passing the small train station platform on your right. Keep following the fence and the railway line before crossing the train line (pictured) and making your way up past the farm on to the initial steep zig-zag section.
After the zig-zag, the path levels out and you can see the summit in the distance (pictured). Keep following this fairly level path until the next steep section.
The next section is steeper and rockier. There should be no need for you to use your hands. At the top it will level out. After crossing the train line you will join the Llanberis path.
Follow the clear path all the way to the top.
Re-trace your steps when descending. Please remember to keep an eye out for this rock (pictured), which clearly shows the way down the Cwellyn / Snowdon Ranger Path — it’s important not to make the mistake of heading down the Llanberis Path.
