This circular mountain walk climbs Moel Hebog, offering outstanding 360-degree views across Yr Wyddfa, the Nant Gwynant valleys, and out towards the Llŷn Peninsula, before returning through quiet woodland above Beddgelert.
You’re in the right place if you’re looking for a more adventurous walk with steep sections, big views, and a real sense of achievement. The route includes some hands-on scrambling and is best suited to confident walkers in good conditions.
The ascent of Moel Hebog is steady but demanding, with rocky paths and short scrambling sections that add to the sense of adventure. As height is gained, the views expand quickly, rewarding the effort with one of the finest panoramas in the area.
From the summit, the outlook stretches across Yr Wyddfa and the surrounding Snowdonian peaks, with clear days revealing the coastline and the Llŷn Peninsula beyond. Despite being lower than Snowdon itself, Moel Hebog offers a remarkably open and dramatic viewpoint.
The descent leads past Moel yr Ogof, traditionally linked to Owain Glyndŵr, who is said to have hidden in a cave here during his rebellion. This section adds a strong sense of history and legend to the walk as the route begins to leave the open mountain behind.
The final stretch through Beddgelert’s pine forest makes for a sheltered and atmospheric end to the day. The direct path through the forest can get very wet and muddy — proper waterproof boots are essential on this section rather than just trail shoes. If conditions are bad, the forestry tracks are a drier alternative though they add some distance, so a map is useful if you take that option.
“If you can do this one in May, do. The bluebells on the lower slopes are something special. It’s also worth knowing this walk starts almost from the door if you’re staying in Beddgelert — no drive needed, which makes it feel even more of an adventure.” — Delyth, Perthi Holiday Cottages
