Things to Do in Beddgelert with Kids: Dragons, Ice Cream & a Lake Swim

Beddgelert is one of the most magical villages in Eryri (Snowdonia) for families. Surrounded by rivers, woodland paths and mountain views, it’s the perfect place for children to explore while parents enjoy the slower pace of village life. Here’s my idea of a perfect family day out — based on what I know works well for guests staying at Perthi Holiday Cottages in Beddgelert.

1. Morning Walk to Dinas Emrys

Best for: Adventure, legends and easy family walking

Start the day with a walk to Dinas Emrys, a small but fascinating hill just outside the village. According to Welsh legend, this is where the wizard Merlin revealed the battle between the red and white dragons — a story that became part of Welsh folklore and inspired the red dragon on the Welsh flag.

The walk is short but full of atmosphere. A woodland path winds up past a waterfall before opening onto the ancient hillfort, with views across the valley from the top. For children it feels like discovering a secret castle hidden in the trees, and there’s enough legend and history to keep them interested throughout.

“My two daughters did this walk when they were four and six — it’s very manageable for young children. The waterfall on the way up is a highlight. The top is a bit rocky so the youngest might need a hand, but that’s all part of the adventure.”

2. Ice Cream in the Village

Best for: A well-earned treat after the walk

Back in the village, head straight to Glaslyn Artisan Ice Cream — a Beddgelert institution since 1970 and a firm favourite with every family that stays at Perthi. Everything is made on site in small batches, and there are around 20 flavours at any time including dairy-free and vegan options.

While you’re there it’s worth booking a table for supper — the pizzeria next door is a popular evening option for families and fills up quickly in season.

“The ice cream here is genuinely exceptional — not just good for a village. The salted caramel is the one most guests come back for. My two go straight for the vanilla — which is testament to how good it is when plain vanilla is the one worth choosing.”

After ice cream, wander down to the riverbank where the children can watch the water rushing over the rocks. It’s one of those simple moments that often ends up as a favourite memory of the trip.

3. Afternoon by Llyn Dinas

Best for: Paddling, swimming and lakeside relaxation

A few minutes’ drive from the village, Llyn Dinas is one of the most beautiful lakes in Eryri. You can walk there from Beddgelert along this scenic route through the Gwynant Valley: Beddgelert, Gwynant Valley and Llyn Dinas Walk.

On warm days it becomes a natural playground — children paddling along the shoreline, skimming stones, or swimming in the clear mountain water. It’s easy to lose a whole afternoon here without anyone noticing.

“Llyn Dinas is where we go when we want to slow the day right down. The water is cold even in summer but that never seems to put children off.”
— Delyth, Perthi Holiday Cottages

4. Supper Back in the Village

Best for: Ending the day with something easy and good

After a full day outdoors, head back to Glaslyn Artisan Ice Cream & Pizza for supper if you booked earlier — fresh pizzas, relaxed atmosphere, and very well suited to tired families after a day in the hills. By this point everyone is usually pleasantly exhausted in the way that only comes from fresh mountain air.

Why Beddgelert Works So Well for Families

Within a few miles of the village you can explore ancient legends, wander a beautiful riverside village, and end the day beside a peaceful mountain lake. It’s simple, outdoorsy, and the kind of day children actually remember — climbing a hill, eating ice cream, splashing in a lake with mountains all around.

Even on a shorter visit there’s plenty to keep children happy — the riverside path along the Glaslyn, a visit to Gelert’s Grave to hear the legend, or a ride on the heritage railway for a scenic journey through Eryri. See our full things to do in Beddgelert guide for more ideas.
