This rewarding out-and-back walk climbs Mynydd Mawr from Rhyd Ddu, combining forest paths, open hillside, and wide-ranging summit views across Snowdonia and the coast.

You’re in the right place if you’re looking for a steady mountain walk with a sustained ascent and big views, rather than scrambling or technical terrain. Best suited to confident walkers in good conditions.

Starting from Rhyd Ddu, the route begins with a gentle walk through forest, offering shelter and a gradual introduction before the climb begins in earnest. As the path leaves the trees, the landscape opens out and the sense of space quickly grows.

The ascent of Mynydd Mawr is straightforward but persistent, with the effort rewarded by expanding views throughout the climb. Yr Wyddfa, Moel Eilio, Yr Aran, and the Nantlle Ridge all come into view, giving a clear sense of Snowdonia’s scale and variety.

At the summit, the panorama is particularly impressive. On clear days, views stretch across the Menai Strait towards Anglesey and Caernarfon, with Snowdon filling the skyline to the east and the Nantlle Ridge stretching away to the south.

The return follows the same route back to Rhyd Ddu, allowing time to enjoy the changing light and perspectives on the descent. With its combination of forest, open mountain, and expansive views, this walk offers a satisfying and less crowded alternative to Snowdon’s main paths.

“This is probably the walk we’ve done the most ourselves — and the reason is simple. It’s quiet, the path is straightforward, and the views across the Menai Strait towards Anglesey from the summit are uninterrupted in a way you don’t get from busier peaks. On a clear day it’s hard to beat.” — Delyth, Perthi Holiday Cottages

Step-by-Step Walk Guide

Numbered steps with photos to help you follow the route.

Free parking can be found on the main road in front of the Cwellyn Arms Pub in Rhyd Ddu. During the high season, make sure you arrive early. Alternatively, there is paid parking on the way out of the village towards Beddgelert.
To begin the walk, take the main road signposted Pen-y-Groes that leads up behind the Cwellyn Arms. Follow the road up for about 50 meters and just after passing the national speed limit signposts there is a turning right into the forestry along a track.
Keep following the forest track which turns into a narrower path until you arrive at a turning up left between the trees (pictured). This turning is approximately 3/4 of a mile walk from the main road.
Carry on up straight through the trees (don't take any turning) until you arrive at an opening in the fence, which brings you out of the forest. After going through the gap in the fence, immediately turn right and follow the clear path next to the fence towards Mynydd Mawr.
After the stile the path gets steeper. Fairly soon you will reach a crossroad, don't turn here, go straight over ascending steeply.
After the steep ascent you will arrive at a plateau, where you can see the peak of Mynydd Mawr in the distance. Follow the path which curves steadily uphill towards the top.
At the top you will find a large stone shelter. From here, retrace your steps to return to the village and your car.
