This rewarding circular walk climbs Moel Eilio before continuing over Foel Gron and Foel Goch, offering wide mountain views and an enjoyable high-level route above the Llanberis valley.
You’re in the right place if you’re looking for a clear, easy-to-follow mountain walk with a short but steep initial climb. While the ascent to Moel Eilio is a definite slog, the paths are straightforward and the views quickly make the effort worthwhile.
Starting from Waunfawr, the walk gains height rapidly, taking advantage of the already elevated starting point. The initial climb to the summit of Moel Eilio is steep and sustained, but it is mercifully short, delivering you quickly onto open ground with expansive views.
From the top of Moel Eilio, the route continues along a broad ridge to Foel Gron and Foel Goch. These additional summits are gentle and enjoyable, giving the walk a satisfying sense of progression without adding significant difficulty.
Throughout the walk, there are excellent views across Yr Wyddfa and the surrounding Eryri mountains, with changing perspectives as the route curves around the high ground above Llanberis. Despite its elevated setting, the terrain remains approachable and non-technical.
For those short on time, the walk can also be enjoyed as a simple out-and-back ascent of Moel Eilio alone, offering quick access to outstanding views with minimal navigation. The full circular route then descends back towards Waunfawr, completing a varied and rewarding mountain outing.
“We live in Waunfawr so this is genuinely our local walk — the one we come back to regularly. Most locals only go as far as the top of Moel Eilio and turn back, but the full circuit over Foel Gron and Foel Goch is well worth doing. The ridge section is easy and the views of Yr Wyddfa from up there are some of the best you’ll get anywhere. It doesn’t feel like a tourist walk — it feels like the real thing.” — Delyth, Perthi Holiday Cottages
