Cwm Idwal with the lake and Devils's kitchen in the background

This short circular walk explores the dramatic, bowl-shaped hollow of Cwm Idwal, with the clear waters of Llyn Idwal at its centre, offering one of the most accessible ways to experience the rugged beauty of the Eryri mountains.

You’re in the right place if you’re looking for a scenic, low-level walk with big mountain surroundings but without strenuous climbs. The route follows clear paths and can be enjoyed at a relaxed pace.

Cwm Idwal is a classic ice-sculpted landscape, where steep cliffs and rocky slopes rise sharply around a broad, open basin. Walking around the edge of Llyn Idwal gives a close-up view of this dramatic setting, with constantly changing perspectives across the water and surrounding crags.

Despite the wild feel of the cwm, the walking itself is straightforward, making this an ideal introduction to Snowdonia’s mountain scenery. The combination of open space, water, and towering rock faces creates a powerful sense of place without the need for sustained ascent.

Paid parking is available at the Cwm Idwal visitor centre, though spaces fill quickly during busy periods, so arriving early is advised. Free parking can be found in the bays along the A5 beside Llyn Ogwen — it adds a little extra distance but the views along the lake are worth it and spaces are easier to find.

“I’ll be honest — this isn’t my favourite walk on the site purely because of the crowds it attracts. The scenery is genuinely dramatic and it deserves its reputation, but on a busy summer weekend it can feel more like a queue than a walk. Come early morning or out of season and it’s a different experience entirely — the cwm feels properly wild and the lake is stunning. Worth doing once, ideally on a quiet day.” — Delyth, Perthi Holiday Cottages

Step-by-Step Walk Guide

Numbered steps with photos to help you follow the route.

The walk starts to the left of the visitor centre, with a short uphill paved path to begin the route.
You cross a small wooden bridge and the path carries on uphill before curving to the right towards the lake.
The lake will appear at the brow of the hill. Take the path along the left hand side of the lake.
When you arrive at the Idwal Slabs (see left hand side of picture) the path turns right downhill back towards the lake (it's fairly boggy here). Don't carry on uphill.
Keep following the lakeside path, passing the rocky beach and crossing the bridge over the river to complete the circular lake walk. Then retrace your steps back downhill towards the car park.
