This rewarding mountain walk climbs Cnicht, one of the most distinctive peaks in Eryri, rising sharply above the Glaslyn Valley from the rugged Moelwynion range and often nicknamed the “Welsh Matterhorn”.
You’re in the right place if you’re looking for a satisfying mountain walk with a clear summit goal, steady ascent, and a few short scrambling sections. Best suited to confident walkers in good conditions.
Cnicht is instantly recognisable by its steep, pyramidal profile, which gives it a dramatic presence on the skyline despite its modest height. The mountain has long been a local landmark, and its name is thought to derive from Old Welsh, possibly meaning “knight”, reflecting its proud and striking form.
The walk begins near the small village of Croesor, around a 20-minute drive from Beddgelert. The approach road is narrow in places, with passing points, adding to the feeling of heading into a quieter and less-travelled corner of Snowdonia.
On the way to Croesor, you pass Plas Brondanw, once the family home of architect Clough Williams-Ellis. Now open as a café and garden, it makes a pleasant stop either before or after the walk and adds a cultural note to the day.
The final climb includes a few short scrambling sections, straightforward in dry conditions but requiring care. Route finding near the top takes a little attention — take your time here rather than pushing on without checking your line. From the top, the views stretch widely across the Moelwynion hills and down into the Glaslyn Valley, making the ascent feel well worthwhile.
“What I love about Cnicht is that you get one of Wales’s most iconic mountains done in a half day — it’s not a full mountain commitment but it feels like a proper summit. The scrambling is easy but the route finding near the top isn’t always obvious so don’t rush that section. Come back down the same way and take your time — it’s worth it.” — Delyth, Perthi Holiday Cottages
