Rocky path next to Afon Glaslyn in Beddgelert

This circular walk links the dramatic riverside paths of the Aberglaslyn Gorge with the quieter upland scenery of Cwm Bychan, forming one of the most varied walks starting directly from Beddgelert.

You’re in the right place if you’re looking for a rewarding circular walk with changing scenery, combining narrow gorge paths, open valley walking, and a steady climb rather than high mountain terrain.

Leaving Beddgelert, the route follows the Glaslyn River as it cuts through the steep-sided Aberglaslyn Gorge. This section is rich in atmosphere, with tumbling water, rocky cliffs, and ancient woodland creating one of Snowdonia’s most striking natural corridors. After rain the river runs fast and the gorge feels genuinely dramatic — this is one of those walks that’s actually better in wet weather.

The walk then climbs away from the river into Cwm Bychan, where the landscape opens out into a quieter, more pastoral setting. The contrast between the enclosed gorge and the open valley gives the route a strong sense of journey without feeling overly demanding.

On the return leg, the path passes close to the remains of the old Sygun Copper Mine, a reminder of the area’s industrial past. The mine once played an important role in the local economy and now adds a layer of historical interest to the descent back towards the village.

A well-balanced walk from Beddgelert combining natural drama, quiet valley scenery and local history — one of the most varied routes starting directly from the village.

“The gorge after rain is a must — the river comes alive and the whole section feels completely different to a dry day. Just take care on the path as it can be slippery. One other thing worth knowing: it’s easy to find yourself descending towards Llyn Dinas by mistake, but don’t worry if you do — it just makes the walk back to the village slightly longer.” — Delyth, Perthi Holiday Cottages

Step-by-Step Walk Guide

Numbered steps with photos to help you follow the route.

1. Start in the centre of Beddgelert village. The path by the River Glaslyn begins near the public toilets. Go through the gate shown in the picture and follow the path.
2. Follow the path with the river on your left until you reach the wooden bridge. Cross this and keep following the path with the river now on your right. Take care because the path becomes quite rocky.

3. When you get to the main road don't go through the gate to the road but follow the path up left to the trees until you get to the National Trust car park in Nantmor.
4. At the car park, pass behind the toilet building aiming for the old quarry bridge (pictured). Pass under this and follow the path up the valley.
5. Keep following the valley path. When you get to this wooden bench, the path veers right.
6. Once at the top of the valley you will see great views of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) and Llyn Dinas down to your right.
7. Follow the path until you reach the sign directing you left towards Beddgelert and Sygun. *(Here it is possible to extend your walk down to Llyn Dinas if you wish. From the lake there is an easy path along the river back to the village.)
8. When you reach this wooden stile, take the path left which rounds the rocky outcrop. The path is quite steep here so take care.
9. At this junction take the fork right and descend towards Sygun Copper Mine.
10. The path zig-zags down to Sygun Copper Mine where it is possible to stop for some refreshments.
11. After passing the Copper Mine, turn left and follow the small tarmac back road all the way back into Beddgelert village.
