This rewarding out-and-back mountain walk climbs Yr Aran via the atmospheric Cwm y Llan, combining quiet high-level scenery with the striking remains of an old slate quarry on the southern flanks of Snowdon.

You’re in the right place if you’re looking for a quieter, more adventurous mountain walk with steep sections and short scrambling, suited to confident walkers who enjoy less crowded routes in good conditions.

The route passes through Cwm y Llan Quarry, once a thriving slate-working site high on the mountainside. Today, its abandoned buildings, inclines, and scattered slate form a dramatic reminder of Snowdonia’s industrial past and provide a fascinating pause along the way.

Beyond the quarry, the path steepens as it climbs towards Yr Aran. Although the ascent is demanding in places, the route remains clear, with only a couple of short, unexposed scrambling sections adding interest rather than technical difficulty.

From the summit of Yr Aran, wide-ranging views open out across Yr Wyddfa, Cwm Llan, and the surrounding high ground. The quieter nature of this peak gives the top a remote, satisfying feel, making the effort well worthwhile.

For experienced walkers staying at Perthi Holiday Cottages, this walk can be started directly from the farm — no car needed. The route from the cottages is less obvious than the main paths so please refer to the guestbook for directions before setting out.

“This is Snowdon’s quieter neighbour and genuinely one of the most rewarding walks near Beddgelert — the summit views of Yr Wyddfa are as good as anything you’ll get from the top of Snowdon itself, with almost nobody else up there. If you’re staying at Perthi and you’re an experienced walker, ask us about the route from the farm — it’s a special way to start the day.” — Delyth, Perthi Holiday Cottages

Our 17th-century cottages sit just above Beddgelert, with walking routes straight from the door.

Step-by-Step Walk Guide

Numbered steps with photos to help you follow the route.

Free parking can be found at the Beddgelert Forest turning at the top of the hill on the road out of Beddgelert towards Rhyd Ddu. The path begins across the road (pictured), so please take care when crossing the main road.
The path gradually ascends behind Ffridd farm before arriving at the Rhyd Ddu path. At this junction (pictured) you need to turn right which leads you towards the Cwm y Llan quarry.
The path continues gradually uphill. Keep following the path through the quarry. Don't cross any stiles. There is a short steep incline (pictured).
The path keeps going until you arrive at a wall that overlooks Cwm (Valley) Llan. At the wall turn right, following the path. You will keep close to this wall all the way up to the main ridge of Yr Aran.
After a short flat section the path descends towards a stile. Don't go over the stile but cross the wall (pictured); there is a gap. The path is drier and easier on this side. Again follow the wall, but this time keeping the wall on your right until you come to another stile. Cross this and follow the path upwards (keeping the wall on your left) all the way to the ridge of Yr Aran. This section is steep.
When you arrive at the ridge, there is a fence on the wall (pictured). Here you need to stop following the wall and turn right towards the summit.
Follow the path and the rusted fence posts (pictured) all the way to the summit.
Yr Aran doesn't have a distinct peak. It has a flat section where you can sit and admire Yr Wyddfa across the valley.
Retrace your steps all the way back to the car, remembering to take the left turning at the junction (pictured) — you don’t want to end up in Rhyd Ddu.
