Chair overlooking Nant Gwynant valley and the mountains

This varied circular walk combines mountain scenery, hidden waterfalls, and lakeside paths, linking Craflwyn, Cwm y Bleiddiaid, the Watkin Pools, and Llyn Dinas in one richly atmospheric route.

You’re in the right place if you’re looking for a longer, more adventurous walk with steady climbs, big views, and well-defined paths, rather than a simple low-level stroll. Best suited to confident walkers in good conditions.

Starting from Craflwyn, the route climbs steadily into Cwm y Bleiddiaid — the “Valley of the Wolves” — a dramatic hanging valley steeped in local legend and once said to be the hunting ground of ancient Welsh princes.

The walk then joins the Watkin Path, one of the most historic and scenic routes on Yr Wyddfa, created in the 1890s by Sir Edward Watkin. Although famed as a summit route, its lower sections offer a rewarding walk in their own right, combining open mountain scenery with traces of Snowdonia’s industrial and Victorian past.

A short detour leads to the Watkin Pools, a series of clear waterfalls and plunge pools formed by the Afon Cwm Llan. Hidden among rock and woodland, these pools are a striking natural feature and a popular resting place on warm days.

From here, the route descends towards the shores of Llyn Dinas, a tranquil glacial lake set beneath steep valley sides. Long associated with Welsh legend and folklore, the lake provides a peaceful contrast to the higher ground above before the walk returns through forest paths and open pasture back towards the starting point.

This circular walk brings together myth, mountain, water, and woodland, offering one of the most varied and memorable routes in the Beddgelert area without committing to a full summit ascent.

“This is a hidden gem and genuinely one of my favourite walks near Beddgelert — you get the quiet solitude of Cwm y Bleiddiaid at the start, the famous Watkin Pools, and Llyn Dinas all in one route. If you want a longer day you can add Dinas Emrys at the beginning and you’ve essentially covered all the big sites close to the village in one go.” — Delyth, Perthi Holiday Cottages

Our 17th-century cottages sit just above Beddgelert, with walking routes straight from the door.

Step-by-Step Walk Guide

Numbered steps with photos to help you follow the route.

Free parking is available in the lay-by on the main road next to Sygun Copper Mine (or paid parking at Craflwyn, National Trust). Walk back towards Beddgelert along the main road and turn up the drive towards Craflwyn House.
Follow the road around to your left past the front of the house until you come to the car park. From the car park take the footpath leading up into the woods following the black waymarkers.
Keep following the black way markers as they guide you towards the Giant's chair. Continue left up some steps and follow the path as it ascends towards a small stile.

The black waymarkers guide the way over another stile and past some old ruins. The path then meanders down through the valley until you arrive at a stone wall with great views down towards the Watkin Pools. Go through the gate pictured and descend towards the Watkin Path.
Turn right and follow the Watkin Path all the way down to Nant Gwynant arriving at the main road. Walk along the main road past the cafe before crossing the main road almost directly opposite the end of the lay by.
Cross the bridge over the River Glaslyn then take the first right towards Llyn Dinas, signposted Llyndy Isaf.
Pass the farm, then continue following the path beside Llyn Dinas. At the end of the lake, don't cross over the bridge but continue along with the river until you reach Sygun Copper Mine.
