View from Dinas Emrys fort overlooking Llyn Dinas in Snowdonia

This short woodland walk leads from Craflwyn to the summit of Dinas Emrys — an ancient hillfort above the Glaslyn Valley tied to some of Wales's most enduring myths, including the legend of Merlin and the red dragon.

You’re in the right place if you’re looking for a short but atmospheric walk with a sense of adventure, combining woodland paths, Welsh legend, and a rewarding viewpoint. Expect one steep, rocky section near the top.

Dinas Emrys is best known for its place in Welsh mythology. According to legend, this is where the young wizard Merlin (Myrddin) revealed the prophecy of the red and white dragons, symbolising the struggle between the Welsh and the Saxons, when King Vortigern attempted to build a fortress on the hill.

Long before the legend was written down, the hill was already a place of strategic importance. At the summit, the remains of ancient defensive walls and the base of a later medieval tower can still be seen, hinting at centuries of occupation layered beneath the myth.

From the top, the views open out across the Glaslyn Valley and Llyn Dinas, with the surrounding mountains of Snowdonia rising sharply around you. Despite its modest height, the setting feels dramatic and surprisingly wild.

The walk starts from the Craflwyn National Trust car park and forms a short there and back route, making it ideal for families and walkers wanting a meaningful outing without committing to a long day in the hills. Sturdy footwear is advised, particularly after rain, due to the steep and rocky final ascent.

My two daughters did this walk when they were four and six — the waterfall on the way up is the highlight for younger children. The top is a bit rocky so the youngest might need a hand, but that’s all part of it.” — Delyth, Perthi Holiday Cottages
