This scenic walk leads to the Watkin Pools, a series of striking turquoise pools and waterfalls set in the Nant Gwynant Valley on the lower slopes of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon). The striking turquoise colour comes from the mineral content of the water and the smooth pale rock beneath — it looks almost Mediterranean on a bright day.
You're in the right place if you're looking for a short but rewarding mountain walk — this is a there-and-back route with a dramatic payoff. No scrambling and a good clear path throughout — but it's still a mountain environment so sturdy footwear is recommended. Please note that the circular option includes a stepping stone river crossing, which can be dangerous or possibly impassable when water levels are high.
The Watkin Pools are formed by the Afon Cwm Llan as it cascades down from the southern flanks of Yr Wyddfa, carving smooth rock basins and waterfalls along the way. On warm days, the deep, clear pools attract wild swimmers, while at quieter times they offer a peaceful place to pause and take in the mountain surroundings.
The pools lie along the lower section of the historic Watkin Path, created in 1892 by railway magnate Sir Edward Watkin. When the path was opened, Prime Minister William Gladstone famously gave a speech on a nearby boulder now known as Gladstone Rock, adding a layer of Victorian history to what is otherwise a strikingly natural landscape.
Most walkers retrace their steps back to the car park, although it is possible to extend the route into a longer circular walk. Please note that the circular option includes a stepping stone river crossing, which can be dangerous or possibly impassable when water levels are high.
“There’s a free layby next to Caffi Gwynant which is worth knowing about — if you arrive early enough to use it you’ll also beat the crowds to the pools, which makes a real difference. If you’re planning the circular route, be aware the river crossing can be tricky after heavy rain.” — Delyth, Perthi Holiday Cottages
